The essential role of the steam drum

The steam drum, also known as a boiler drum, is one of the key components of water-tube boilers.


Its essential functions include:

  • Separation of water and steam phases;

  • Water storage and level control;

  • Steam purification through separation devices;

  • Water and steam quality control (through chemical injection and blowdown systems);

  • Serving as an interface and connection point for other boiler systems.



The steam drum receives feedwater that has been preheated in heat exchangers and distributes it throughout the evaporation surfaces, maintaining a sufficient water level to ensure safe operation and prevent dry-firing conditions.


Once the appropriate water level is established, circulation begins. Water flows downward through the downcomers, supplying the waterwalls and tube bank. Within these tubes, heat released during combustion is absorbed, creating a two-phase mixture (water and steam) that, due to density differences, returns to the steam drum through the risers.


The saturated steam separated in the steam drum passes through purification devices such as cyclone separators and Chevron dryers, which remove residual moisture. During this process, any remaining moisture is returned to the reservoir to restart the cycle, while the dry steam is directed either to the superheaters or directly to the industrial process where it will be utilized.


Because boiler water is repeatedly subjected to evaporation cycles, dissolved salts tend to become concentrated in the liquid phase. To ensure steam quality and protect the equipment against scaling, corrosion, and thermal efficiency losses, the steam drum also plays an essential role in water quality control through blowdown systems.


Although the steam drum is a well-established component in water-tube boilers, HPB's steam drum features a unique advantage: its internal components are designed to operate at higher drum water levels, increasing fluid residence time and providing greater operational stability.
