São Martinho II
Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB)
With more than 80 years of history, São Martinho has built its path in Brazilian agriculture based on respect, culture, and tradition, since the Ometto family, Italian immigrants, first produced sugar in the Limeira (SP) region in 1932.
Pioneering agricultural management transformed São Martinho into one of the largest companies in Brazil’s sugar-energy sector.
With 100% mechanized harvesting, the company’s four mills, located in the interior of São Paulo and Goiás, have a total crushing capacity of approximately 24 million tons of sugarcane per crop season, with around 10 million tons processed at Usina São Martinho, in Pradópolis (SP), considered one of the largest sugar-energy plants in the world.
Aligned with sustainability and the company’s strategy to increase productivity in the field, Usina São Martinho acquired a new HPB/B&W boiler, with a nominal production capacity of 450,000 kg/h of superheated steam at 545 °C and 104 kgf/cm²(g), from the combustion of sugarcane bagasse in a bubbling fluidized bed.
This will be the largest BFB (Bubbling Fluidized Bed) boiler in the world burning sugarcane bagasse and one of the largest in the world for biomass combustion in general.
Among the technologies included in this project are: Bubbling Fluidized Bed, regenerative cycle, and Electrostatic Precipitator. HPB was a pioneer in offering the innovation of the electrostatic precipitator, a solution that provides high control of particulate emissions, resulting in very low social and visual impact.
In other words, although the boiler generates gases, it will not emit visible smoke.
It also contributes to lower operating and maintenance costs of the plant, requires no water, consumes less energy, and operates continuously for longer periods.
Thus, HPB consolidates its leadership in these technologies with greater efficiency, lower environmental impact, and higher operational availability.
This acquisition by São Martinho is part of the modernization project of its industrial complex. At the Pradópolis (SP) unit, another HPB boiler has been in operation since 2012, with a production capacity of 330,000 kg/h.
The new boiler will increase the plant’s power generation and export capacity.
In summary, the importance of this project is revealed by its scale in terms of sugarcane crushing.
The excellence of the technological solutions to be implemented positions São Martinho S.A. as a benchmark company in the global market.
